Various types of recreation areas (hiking, camping, fishing, RVs, etc.) are a low cost way to utilize some of the most accessible areas of Tribal land. At Blue Stone Strategy Group, we combine cultural sensitivity, respect for the land and a desire to run a profitable enterprise. Our work in this area focuses on determining the unit economics and capacity utilization of the availability and price points (for example cost per night compared to revenue per night). We also look to gain an understanding as to what is the potential size of the market/potential revenue and what competitive dynamics are at play. We also consider partnerships and supply chain options in our assessments.
A large New York Tribe was considering closing its campground and came to Blue Stone for assistance. We assessed their portfolio of businesses, 20 in all, and mapped them against each other based on returns and risk. The results showed that while the campground did not make a high return, it was very low risk and low cost to operate. Accordingly, our team proved that based on risk adjusted return, the campground was definitely worth keeping.
